The Ancient Connections Project linked South West Wales with the South East of Ireland, through the cultures and histories of our sacred springs and holy wells, resulting in five, small, tri-lingual books (Welsh, Irish, English), all published by Parthian. Seven different artists – story-tellers, poets, painters, printer-makers, photographers – were commissioned to respond to the theme.
The Oldest Music (a title borrowed from a line – “Water that plays the oldest music” – in Tony Curtis’ poem in the book At Gumfreston Church – the first volume in the series.
One of the earliest and most powerful links between Ireland and Wales is to be found within our wellspring histories, and the saints and practices which they developed. The Oldest Music explores and celebrates these tales through a selection of old and new poems – the oldest being from the fifteenth century / the most recent commissioned specially for this book – all illustrated with Phil Cope’s photographic creations.
Poets included within the book include Lewys Glyn Cothi [c. 1420-90] , Gwynfardd Brycheiniog, Ieuan ap Rhydderch, Tony Curtis, Grace O’Reilly, Phil Carradice, Angela Graham, Julian Cason, Lorraine O’Dwyer, Eirwyn George and Phil Cope.
